Homeschooling in South Africa: the legal framework
Homeschooling in South Africa is governed by Section 51 of the South African Schools Act (1996) and the Regulations relating to Home Education published in 2018. Key requirements for SA homeschoolers:
- Registration: Homeschooling parents must apply for exemption from compulsory school attendance through the provincial Head of Department of Education.
- Curriculum: Parents have broad freedom to choose their curriculum, provided it covers the required subject areas. Cambridge IGCSE is an accepted curriculum for South African homeschoolers.
- Assessment: Parents must keep portfolios and records of their child's educational progress. In some provinces, annual assessments may be required.
- Private candidates: Cambridge IGCSE students can register as private candidates through a South African Cambridge-approved examination centre.
For the most current requirements in your province, consult the relevant provincial Department of Education or organisations such as Pestalozzi Trust and SA Home Schooling. Epivo does not provide legal advice — always verify requirements with your provincial authority.
Once registered and preparing for Cambridge IGCSE, SA homeschoolers have access to the same external examination system as students in Cambridge schools worldwide — a significant credential for university applications both locally and internationally.
