The four mastery levels
- Not started — You have not encountered this topic yet. It is waiting in your learning plan for the tutor to introduce.
- Learning — The tutor has introduced this topic and you are building understanding. It will come back for review soon as you work toward a solid grasp.
- Practiced — You have a solid understanding of this topic. Reviews are spaced out at increasing intervals, giving you time between sessions while keeping the knowledge fresh.
- Mastered — You have demonstrated strong retention across multiple reviews over an extended period. The topic still comes back occasionally, but only rarely.
How mastery is measured
Mastery is not based on a single test. Epivo evaluates your understanding through natural conversation:
- Can you explain the concept in your own words?
- Can you answer questions about it correctly?
- Can you apply it to related scenarios?
The tutor assesses these things during every interaction. There are no separate quizzes or exams.
Can mastery levels go down?
Yes. If you struggle with a topic during a review, the scheduling algorithm reduces the interval and brings it back sooner. This is completely normal — it means the system is working to strengthen your understanding.
True mastery builds over time through repeated, successful recall at increasing intervals.
