What does Cambridge IGCSE Biology cover?
The Cambridge IGCSE Biology syllabus (0610) covers eight broad topic areas. Extended tier students study additional content within each topic.
Cells and cell processes
Cell structure (plant and animal), osmosis, diffusion, and active transport. Enzyme action and factors affecting enzyme activity.
Nutrition
Photosynthesis — the process, the equation, and the factors affecting rate. Human nutrition — the digestive system, food groups, and absorption.
Transport in plants and animals
Xylem and phloem in plants. The human circulatory system — blood, blood vessels, the heart, and coronary heart disease.
Respiration and gas exchange
Aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the role of ATP, and the respiratory system in humans.
Coordination and response
The nervous system — neurons, synapses, reflex arcs. The endocrine system — hormones and their roles. Homeostasis — including control of blood glucose and body temperature.
Reproduction
Sexual and asexual reproduction. Mitosis and meiosis. The reproductive systems, fertilisation, and development.
Inheritance and variation
DNA structure, genes, chromosomes, and genetic inheritance. Monohybrid crosses, dominant and recessive alleles, codominance. Evolution and natural selection.
Ecology and the environment
Food chains and webs, energy flow, the carbon and nitrogen cycles, and human impact on the environment. Full details at Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610).
