What does Cambridge IGCSE English cover?
Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500) and Second Language English (0510/0511) share overlapping skills but assess them differently.
First Language English (0500)
Designed for students educated in English. Assessed through two papers:
- Paper 1: Reading: Comprehension questions on two passages — factual and literary. Students demonstrate understanding, make inferences, and evaluate the effectiveness of language choices.
- Paper 2: Directed writing and composition: Students complete a directed writing task (usually a letter, report, or speech responding to a given stimulus) and a choice of composition tasks — personal, descriptive, or narrative writing.
A strong grade in First Language English requires precision in language use and the ability to write in different registers (formal, informal, persuasive, descriptive).
Second Language English (0510/0511)
Designed for students learning English as a second language. Focuses on accurate use of English for practical communication — listening, reading, and writing. Less emphasis on literary analysis, more emphasis on clear, accurate written expression.
